Technical Assessments (New Ventures)
This kind of analysis provides an independent judgement on the technical validity of a business plan or venture. Far too often, development costs and schedules are underestimated. The real cost of bringing a product to production is determined by the technical problems and issues involved. If a company is "structured" before the solutions are certain, the overhead can drain the working capital. On the other hand, investors want to see positive expectations and projections, with management in place. An objective critique of the development plan, the capacity and competence of the technical staff, and the validity of the technical assumptions can reduce the risks. Such studies can highlight potential problems and correct oversights. Our evaluations and recommendations are based on our practical experience in managing the process ourselves. We provide such services for investment or acquisition clients, funding agencies, incubator managers, and also for internal development programs.
Technical Evaluations (Intellectual Properties)
The value of patents, licenses, or proprietary knowledge is often overlooked. Such intellectual property has real market value and it can be converted through sale, trade, or licensing. However, the value of such assets are both real (technical content) and abstract (strategic potential). Even if the technology is current and substantive, shifts in the market and advances by competitors can act to reduce the market value of a patent. A technical analysis can provide an independent view of asset status. Cost will depend on the scope of the study.
Technical Forecasting (Competitive Intelligence)
An analysis of publications, patents, and other resources can offer insight into a specific technical field and its active competitors, but advances in unrelated fields can often lead to contradictory outcomes. In an evolving market, knowing where the active investments are concentrated, is just as important as predicting the influence and intersection with external trends. Although forecasting is rarely accurate, having some appreciation for the potential risks and transitions in a market sector is essential to management strategy.
